Spirituality, Religion, and Social Identity: A Multicultural Artmaking (20)

This artmaking workshop will immerse participants in the examination of how religious and spiritual identities impact one’s social experiences. Participants, critically engaged with three contemporary artists, will consider how their own spiritual and religious identities affect their social experiences. Supplies will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring any preferred mediums.

Cardboard Construction: From Ideation to Completion (20)

Teaching students how to transform their thinking from 2D to 3D in a choice-based unit.  The presentation will include a unit outline: introduction, sketches, creating maquettes, basic construction, the importance of textures, painting techniques, and the grading process.  This workshop will also allow participants an opportunity to build their own house or practice various parts of the unit.

Stitched Together: Combining Printmaking and Quilting (25)

This presentation will put a new spin on printmaking and collaborative student artworks. In this presentation you will learn how to carve a linocut block to use to print your own quilt square. These squares will then be sewn together to make a quilted wall hanging. Participants will take home their blocks and prints as examples as well as lesson plans, rubrics, quilting guides, and worksheets to support their future lessons.

Come learn about a science and art-based interdisciplinary STEAM unit where students explore concepts like entomology, species, and habitats as well as the artists, Damien Hurst, Christopher Marley and Lucy Arnold. You will create biospheres and receive resources for additional projects such as a New Species Hybrid drawing. No materials required.

Informed by hat designs from all over the world, participants will create an expressive hat from paper products (cardboard, copy paper, tissue paper, wrapping paper, etc.) to represent, amply, or project some aspect of their personality.  Lesson plans, PowerPoint, and rubric will be shared with all participants.

What to do with your Old Textbooks...Let's Make Visual JOURNALS! (20)

Bring a few old school textbooks, and together we will play and explore the magic of art! Participants will learn about book binding via a variety of stitching patterns, hole punching techniques and create their own unique book by upcycling old textbooks. Once these books have been constructed, participants will alter the pages to create their own visual journals in which they can explore a variety of prompt-based ideas. Lesson plans, student examples, and happy landfills will be included in this must see workshop!

In this hands-on workshop, you will start two weaving projects that middle level students love: hand weaving and geometric plastic canvas designs, AND view examples and lesson plans for several more weaving projects the presenters have actually used in the classroom with 6th-8th grade students. Through Keith Haring Style and Mixed Media Drawings, we will explore the self-portrait and how we can express who we are when our artworks do not reflect our image. This will be a hands-on workshop where participants will make their own self-portrait examples and receive lesson ideas, rubrics, presentations, and worksheets to take home.
